VINEYARD:

CROZES-HERMITAGE:

Wine imbued with the essences of the northern terroir, Crozes-Hermitage is born on stony, warm and seeping soils. This vast appellation, partly worked on the hillsides, is made up of Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Rousanne for the whites. The garnet-coloured reds are flavoursome and balanced. The whites are dry, aromatic and peppered with floral notes.

Cellar information:

Domaine Guigal was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, a small ancient village and cradle of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. It is home to a unique vineyard where vines and wine have been celebrated for 2,400 years. Arriving in 1924 at the age of 14, the founder vinified 67 vintages in Côte-Rôtie and was involved early in his career in the development of Etablissements Vidal-Fleury. In 1961, although very young, Marcel Guigal took over the management of the Maison alongside his father, brutally struck down by total blindness. In 1973 his wife Bernadette joined him and they worked together to develop the family business. In 1975 his son Philippe, today the winemaker of the house, was born. Accompanied by his wife Eve, he represents the third generation and continues the family work in the service of the Great Wines of the Rhône Valley. Since 1946, hard work and perseverance have borne fruit and certain stages bear witness to this, such as the takeover of Etablissements Vidal-Fleury in the early 1980s, which still retains full commercial autonomy and its own identity. Ten years later, 1995 was marked by the acquisition of the famous Château d'Ampuis, a historical and oenological hotspot, located on the banks of the Rhône, whose long history is directly linked to the Côte-Rôtie appellation. The Guigal estate was embellished in 2001 with the acquisition of the former Jean-Louis Grippat estate and the Vallouit estate, enabling it to consolidate its position within the Côte-Rôtie appellation but also in Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. Since the summer of 2003, Maison Guigal, determined to always improve its knowledge of wine and the surrounding environment, has embarked on a completely new adventure: cooperage. This traditional and ancestral work ensures an additional technical mastery in the charm of the historic setting of the Château d'Ampuis. In March 2006, the Guigal family acquired Domaine de Bonserine and supported its development, which remained independent of that of Domaine Guigal. The purchase of Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in July 2017 marks an important step in the history of Maison Guigal, which thus establishes itself in the southern Rhône Valley, with Nalys becoming the family's southern flagship. We are not so far from the first square meters of cellar where Etienne Guigal was active, but now it is on three hectares of cellars and galleries abounding in barrels, casks and vats. The history and soul of the Guigal family are very present in these places that secretly house exceptional wines. Together, this family selects, breeds and markets, with ardor and passion, the greatest Appellations of the Rhône Valley.
