During the Spanish occupation of Flanders by the Duke of Alba the Augustinians founded several monasteries in the occupied areas. These monks also brewed their own beer, and the owner of the Van Steenberge brewery, Joseph Van Steenberge, got the license and the recipes to brew the Augustijn beers. There are photos from the early 1960s in which some Augustinian monks visit the brewery, checking the empty bottles, the brewing process and the beer itself.

More information

Abbey beer, tripel type, 9% alcohol, top fermented and with secondary fermentation in the bottle As its name suggests, the Augustijn Grand Cru is the tripel version of the Augustijn Blond: being stronger, in alcohol content and bitterness, which sports a golden color honoring its reputation as one of the wonders in the firmament of Belgian beers.

Its fruity aroma, typical of the Augustijn Blond: being stronger, in alcohol content and bitterness, which sports a golden color doing honor to its reputation of being one of the wonders in the firmament of Belgian beers Its fruity aroma, typical of a triple, combines with its pronounced bitterness due to the abundant use of several types of hops and that magnificent combination is perfected during the second fermentation in the bottle, where it forms naturally that great layer of foam.

The Augustijn Grand Cru is an all-rounder and has very good characteristics, both as an aperitif and after a good meal, accompanying strong cheeses such as cabrales or grilled fish dishes.

We recommend it especially to accompany a grilled fish dish We recommend it especially to accompany a bouillabaisse or a seafood.
