Isoflavones are bioflavonoids with a structure and activity similar to estrogens (without adverse effects), which is why they are called phytoestrogens due to their plant origin. They interact with estrogen receptors found mainly in the vascular wall, bone, lower urogenital tract and central nervous system. In the male, isoflavones act as inhibitors of 5 alpha-reductase, the enzyme responsible for transforming testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. High levels of dihydrotestosterone are directly related to benign prostatic hyperplasia and baldness.
