This plant is native to India. It is the sacred plant of Vishnu. Many, many years ago it reached the Mediterranean peoples and hence its widespread use in Greece, in Provence, France, and in Italy. It was first brought by the Greeks and then by the Romans. In ancient Egypt it was used in the mummification process. For the Romans it was the symbol of lovers

It is widely used in Vietnamese and Thai cuisine, so in vogue in recent years. Basil has a spicy clove flavor and smells a bit like mint and licorice.

    • Crespa basil (O.B. var. crispum): tastes the same as the common basil and as it has large leaves, it is used for wrapping food in them
