Herbs and spices were brought to Amsterdam from all parts and corners of the world and Lucas Bols taught them to create the finest liqueurs that in the decades that followed, would make him famous.

Around 1612 the company was attached to the city of Amsterdam. His son, Jan Jacob Bols, built a new distillery to replace his father's old shed. For centuries the company and all its confidential recipes passed from father to son. However, in 1816 the direct descendants in the Bols dynasty passed away and the family sold the company; they made one important condition: the Bols name was to remain forever on the distillery.

Bols Liqueurs are significantly better than their competition in many respects. This has been established by a study by the CSO (the Aroma and Flavour Research Institute). A team of 24 neutral panelists came to this conclusion that Bols Liqueurs are way ahead of their competitors.
