The Montsant DO is home to everything from large cooperatives to family-run initiatives, private wineries of varying sizes and producers who make wines from their own vineyards using the facilities of other wineries.
While the DO Montsant encompassed 28 wineries when it was born, there are now more than 50 wineries that coexist. Despite the structural differences between them, they all share the same objective: to produce quality wines that speak of this land
Grape varieties
The vineyards of the Montsant DO are planted between 50 meters above sea level in the lower areas, and 700 meters in the higher areas.

Among the grape varieties authorized by the DO Montsant, there are 4 that can be considered historical and predominant. In the case of the whites, these are Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, and in the case of the reds, Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena, which represent more than 65% of the Montsant vineyards
These historic and native varieties are the ones that are best adapted to the territory and which give the Montsant DO its uniqueness within the world wine scene
In addition to these historic varieties, in the Montsant DO we can find wines made with chardonnay, muscat, pansal, parelllada, cabernet sauvignon, hairy garnacha, merlot, monastrell, picapoll tinta, syrah and tempranillo
Garnacha and cariñena, essence of Montsant
Variety well adapted to heat and drought. With a very sensual aromatic profile, it produces highly complex and well-structured wines. Notes of citrus fruits with a background of balsamic and spices are typical of red Grenache. On the other hand, due to the high concentrations of sugars in overripening and its oxidative capacity, red Grenache is used in the production of fortified wines
It is a relatively productive variety that needs sunshine to ripen properly. Cariñena wines show accentuated pigmentation and are aromatically very intense and of moderate alcoholic strength, while enjoying excellent acidity. In the mouth they are slightly astringent and very elegant
White grenache
Variety well adapted to warm climates, very juicy and aromatic fruit, from which white wines with personality and great taste capacity are extracted. Garnacha Blanca wines enjoy good acidity and balance, whether young or barrel-aged. The aromas of honey and undergrowth and the silky mouthfeel are typical of Grenache Blancs
Macabeo
Variety of large, thin-skinned, golden yellow grapes. Good ripening and sugar concentration. It produces dry, fresh and balanced wines. The fruity aromas of apple and white fruits are typical of macabeu. They are consumed young and, in many cases, are used to make coupages with Garnacha Blanca
The wines of the DO Montsant are faithful to their origin, resulting in unique wines that speak of how a climate of contrasts, the rugged terrain, the variability of soils, grape varieties and the hand of man influence to give life to unique wines with identity. The wines of the DO Montsant bring diversity and enrich the DO, while defining it in a global way
Tintos
They are the most common in the DO Montsant, and is that, by tradition, these lands have always been lands of red wines. More than 90% of the grape production corresponds to red varieties, among which Grenache and Carignan stand out for being the best adapted to the conditions of the DO and the ones that best transmit its identity. Both give full-bodied wines, very suitable for aging. Red Grenache has a very sensual aromatic profile, with great complexity, and produces well-structured wines. Carignan, on the other hand, is aromatically very intense and produces wines of moderate alcohol content and very good acidity
Whites
Whites
They are made almost exclusively from the two traditional varieties of the area: garnacha banca, with more body and structure, and macabeo, which gives finer wines. Both are distinguished by silkiness, structure and elegant and subtle aromas
Rosé wines have been gaining presence over the years. They are intense on the nose and silky on the palate, and stand out for their fruity aromas
These are wines with a long tradition in this territory. In the past, when the wineries were family-owned, it was common to have a barrel of rancio wine and another of sweet wine. Nowadays, the production of traditional liqueur wines is much more systematized but without losing space in the totality of the production. In addition, sweets, rancios and mistelas have recently regained their prestige as a gourmet product
