Orange is one of the most popular and healthy fruits in the world. It has a high vitamin C content. Its flavor, especially of some varieties is really superb for its acidity and sweetness

Like all citrus fruits contain forty to fifty percent juice, twenty to forty percent peel and twenty to thirty percent pulp and seeds. Approximately 90 percent of its content is water with five percent sugars.

The orange is the fruit obtained from the sweet orange tree (Citrus × sinensis), an ancient hybrid tree native to India, Vietnam or southeastern China.

Properties and benefits. Recommended for:

• Orange is the fruit par excellence in cases of colds due to its high vitamin C content. It is consumed naturally or in juices. See Against colds

There are three basic varieties of oranges: the sweet orange, the best known and the one we usually buy in the markets; the bitter orange, used mainly for making bitter orange marmalade; and the sanguinelli, with a red-orange color that is popular for juices.

When it comes to buying the most important varieties are:

• Persian orange is currently the most commonly cultivated variety in southern Europe since the 11th century and is the orange that Christopher Columbus brought to Haiti and the Caribbean in 1493
• N navel orange or "navel" (California orange)The product of a mutation that occurred in 1820 in a monastery in Brazil, from which others have been derived, such as the navelina, a hybrid with an easy-to-peel rind, and the navelate or late navel.
• Valencian orange (Valencia late, or Valencia tardía), is one of the sweet varieties for juice. It is the one that predominates in the markets after the navel season. This variety, despite its denomination, has no relation of origin with Valencia
• Blood orange (sanguine)
The blood orange has red stripes on the skin, and the juice is often a dark reddish color

It is the quintessential breakfast juice. Do not forget to have breakfast and frequently drink a glass of orange juice

Citrus fruits, it is advisable to take in the morning, orange juice if taken on an empty stomach, eliminates toxic substances and prevents us against many diseases

However, oranges are part of a large number of preparations and traditional recipes in Spain and other countries

Best time: The orange season is from January to May. This is when you can get oranges in Spain at a very reasonable price. There is a difference between juice oranges (cheaper in season, rich in juice) and table oranges (aesthetically larger and more beautiful).

Storage: Fresh oranges can last more than three weeks in the refrigerator, although if stored at room temperature more juice can be extracted
